We are seeking to appoi=
nt a Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence within UCL=E2=80=99s Depart=
ment of Computer Science to work on a 3-year project on repurposing funded =
by the Leverhulme Trust.

PROJECT TITLE: Repurposing of Reso=
urces: from Everyday Problem Solving to Crisis Management

P=
I: Anthony Hunter, UCL Department of Computer Science, London
CIs: Antonis Bikakis, Luke Dickens, and Rob Mi=
ller, UCL Department of Information Studies, London

ABSTRAC=
T: The ability to repurpose objects and processes is an important kind of h=
uman intelligence for dealing with mundane everyday problems through to lar=
ge-scale crisis management. Despite its ubiquity, it is largely unstudied i=
n academia. To address this, we will develop a general theory, and tools ba=
sed on artificial intelligence, for repurposing. We plan to harness and ext=
end AI methods from machine learning (including supervised and semi-supervi=
sed learning from data and text) and machine reasoning (including commonsen=
se reasoning, defeasible reasoning, ontological reasoning, and computationa=
l argumentation). To ground our research, we will use substantial case stud=
ies (for example in everyday contexts such as cooking and DIY, through to k=
ey challenges such as recycling and crisis management), and undertake syste=
matic evaluations. Our emphasis will be on how repurposing can be emulated =
rather than on investigating its philosophy or psychology. However, as our =
findings emerge, we will disseminate our work, and seek collaborations, in =
multidisciplinary contexts.

RESEARCH FELLOW POSITION:=
We would like to recruit a post-doc with experience in machine learning an=
d/or machine reasoning who will be happy to contribute to the development o=
f the general theory of repurposing, to take responsibility for compiling t=
he corpora/datasets for the case studies, and to learn about, apply, and de=
velop techniques that combine machine learning and machine reasoning for AI=
tools to undertake or support repurposing.

The appointment=
will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be =C2=A336,028 – =C2=A343,5=
33 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
