[bull-ia] PhD position in machine learning and computer vision

(apologies for multiple posts)

The Publimape project (Public Information Mapped to Environmental Events) f=
unded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) studies how to contrib=
ute to the exact cartography of a climatic event by combining social data m=
ining with the latest advances in
machine learning.
It develops an experimental prototype and applies it to hydrological modell=
ing. Short to medium-term flood predictions are indeed of critical importan=
ce in the case of a major meteorological event, and 2D grid models are ofte=
n used as proxies to perform this
task. For testing the new approach, Publimape advocates the construction a=
nd assimilation of an additional 2D spatial prediction grid constructed exc=
lusively by exploiting data from social media such as Twitter.

More information on Publimape is available at:

ental-events-2

The successful candidate will prepare the PhD under an academic supervision=
from the University of Geneva, and will work at LIST, in an international =
project team gathering data analytics and hydrological researchers. As an e=
mployee from the LIST, the candidate
will benefit from competitive salary and advantages.

DESCRIPTION

The PhD Student=92s main mission is to carry out doctoral research towards =
his/her thesis. The outcome of the thesis is valorised through different st=
reams, namely publications and patents. He/she produces new scientific know=
ledge aligned with the strategy of
the department/unit/group. He/she reinforces the scientific basis of the d=
epartment/unit/group.

We are looking for a motivated and innovative PhD candidate, with proven sk=
ills in software development and prototyping, as well as interest in advanc=
ed mathematical and statistical topics. The main tasks of the PhD preparati=
on will be as follows.
